Tim Walz,Harris

评论是开玩笑的(the comment was made in jest),但确实指出了 Tim Walz 和中国的过去,其实对于他和中国都是很棘手的事情。

Next China: Walz's tricky past

That’s a reference to the belief fostered by the Chinese government that foreign “black hands” are responsible for any political unrest. The comment was made in jest but it points to how Walz’s history with China may prove tricky for both him and Beijing.

On the one hand, the Minnesota governor has often spoken warmly about the nation’s people. He’s described them as “kind, generous, capable.”

Yet at the same time Walz said that if the people “had the proper leadership, there are no limits on what they could accomplish.” Those are not the kind of comments that would please the government in Beijing.

Neither would a post on social media that said Walz once had a “life-changing” lunch with the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader exiled by China.

And back in 2016, he pointed to “many areas of cooperation that we can work on” yet also said the US needed to “stand firm” against China on its behavior in the South China Sea.

Beijing views most of that body of water as its own, and wants the US to stay out.

Walz is now the first person on a presidential ticket to have such extensive experience living in China since George H. W. Bush, the US ambassador in Beijing in the 1970s.

That kind of background could see him offer more nuanced insights on the world’s No. 2 economy than some other US political figures.

Yet it seems likely that if his ticket wins in November’s election, Walz as vice president would back a China strategy pretty similar to the Biden administration’s tough line on trade, technology, Taiwan and more.

That suggests the world would be in store for more of the kind of China-US frictions that we’ve seen in recent years.
