For years we have been talking about addiction to the Internet, and then to the mobile phone. A recent surveys in UK found that 9% of adults would rather live without their own children for a week than give up their mobile phone, while 53% of those polled admitted they were addicted to their handsets. Now we are putting together a support group for those who find themselves addicted. By speaking of the group, I mean, what we offer as some of the treatments are group therapy sessions for those people.
The group itself becomes a therapeutic tool, because people are getting out of their rooms where they stay with the computer or the mobile phone for many hours and even days, surfing the Internet or the WeChat. People are getting out of the isolation and are dealing with other people face-to-face. They are getting support from other people. They realize that it is not just them, that there are other people who are engaged in the same behavior and facing the same problems, and also they can help each other to strategize about what is the best way for them to break the pattern, to figure out other things to do. And also we examine people's life situations, it is important to figure out what is going on in the person's life that is contributing to these particular behaviors. Why is the person spending so much time on the Net and the WeChat? Are they avoiding something? Or are they trying to find some fulfillment in this way?
As far as how many people are actually addicted to the Internet or the WeChat, there was one study which said about 2 or 3 percent. I would say at least 5 percent of people who are seriously having problems. The thing is, though, it is very easy to slip into and you don't realize it, especially for college students and teenagers. For instance, we have labs on campus where people can just go in, they may be doing a paper or some other project on the computer, and then they just check the chat rooms and see what is going on, and then before they know it, hours go by.

1709 - Ice Hotel
M: Did I tell you about my trip to Sweden?
W: No. I don't think so. On business, were you?
M: Yes, but you'll never guess the hotel the Swedes had booked us into.
W: Somewhere posh, was it?
M: No, not exactly. It's called the Ice Hotel. Have you heard of it?
W: No, I don't think so.
M: Well, you should have seen this place. I'm telling you, it was like something out of a James Bond movie! Right in the middle of nowhere. And completely built out of snow and ice!
W: What? You mean the walls were made of ice!
M: Walls, ceilings, doors, tables, beds and chandeliers, the lot! The whole thing is literally made of ice!
W: But, hang on. That's not possible, is it? I mean, it would just melt!
M: It does. They have to rebuild it from top to bottom every summer, with a brand-new design. So the online ad said.
W: You're joking.
M: No, it's true. But in the winter it's minus nine or something.
W: So how come you didn't freeze to death?
M: We nearly did. Let me tell you, it was like an igloo in there. And that's putting it mildly. But let's just say we'd had plenty of time to warm us up in the bar before we went to bed!
W: It's got a bar?
M: Of course it has. Believe me, you need a few vodkas in you if you're going to stay in a place like that.
W: I can imagine.
M: And they even make their cocktail glasses out of ice, so you don't need any in your drink.
W: Now. you're having me on.
M: No. it's true. I'm not exaggerating. All the glasses are made of ice.
W: Amazing! But it doesn't sound like the sort of place I'd want to stay in.
M: Actually, it wasn't that bad once you got used to it. And it was great at night, lying in bed under a reindeer skin, looking up at the Aurora Borealis lighting up the mid-night sky. Talk about spectacular; it was out of this world! And, you'll never believe who we bumped into in the bar one night.
W: Who?
M: Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
W: Oh, come on! You mean the models?
M: Yeah, apparently, it's a really trendy place, this Ice Hotel. It's where all the cool people go.
W: Yeah, very funny! So you'd recommend it then?
M: Yeah, I would, but make sure you take a bottle of something strong with you, if you know what I mean.
W: I would like to meet those models, but I don't think I can stand the cold and I don't drink something strong either.
