1909 - Compete with AI

In what is the debate of the century, how do we compete with AI for jobs in the future? We must recognize that technology is dependent on numerous social components that come together, and the interactions between these components make up complicated systems. In the case of artificial intelligence, not only do the technical pieces have to fall in place but also adhere the social dynamics and heuristics that humans have created in the workplace. No matter how much deep learning, machine learning, or natural language processing an AI system is equipped with, there will still be a lot of subjectivity that makes it hard for AI to completely replace humans in the office.

AI might be able to enter data in a spreadsheet, set up meetings, or research who your sales team should call up next, but these are set functions that don't comprise the entire job. If you're hired to do just mere functions, then there will be stiff competition from AI, and this is what will incentivize job seekers to develop skills that evolve beyond “push a button roles in the workplace. AI will be most effective if it is used to assist humans. The analogy I like to take is the Tesla Autopilot. It's semi-autonomous but still requires human involvement and oversight. This has become a practical solution that was able to get to market early and benefit drivers. A completely autonomous car is much more difficult to develop will take longer to get to market, and there will be numerous ethical, economic and legislative implications that will impact its success. We need human-AI collaboration to make sure things are being handled the way we want them to be. The last thing I would need as a business owner is to have an AI system go rogue and make decisions that I cannot retract.

We choose to introduce AI because of the benefits they yield for our business or home. Therefore, we need to decide to what extent these technologies should work and how much control they have. I still believe that humans assistants do.

1909 - Trip Diary

M: Hello, Ana. I haven't seen you for some time. Have you been away?

W: Yes, I've just returned from a holiday in France and Spain.

M: Sounds great. Did you travel around much?

W: Quite a lot. I had a month's holiday so there was plenty of time.

M: How did you get around?

W: Oh, all sorts of ways, bus, train, car and plane. I caught the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel from London to Paris. Incidentally, I met a friend on the train who was also going to Paris, so I had company on the train journey. In fact she had some friends in Paris so I stayed with them for a few days instead of a hotel. It saved me a lot of money.

M: That was lucky! What did you do there?

W; Oh, the normal things--went to Louvre and Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower and so on. It was my first visit to Paris and so it was interesting to visit them. I also went to The Champs-Elysees, the famous shopping avenue, and the Arc de Triomphe. They are all within walking distance, of course, for a young person. The goods there are too expensive, though.

M: You bet they are. Where did you go next?

W: To Avignon in the south of France. I went by bus so I saw a lot of the villages. I really like some of the buildings there. I stayed in a small hotel that was really comfortable and pleasant. After that, I went by bus to Barcelona. It's a fascinating city and I stayed there for a long time, nearly two weeks.

M: Two weeks in Barcelona, what were you doing there?

W. Well. there are a lot of restaurants and as I really liked Spanish food, I spent many happy hours there. I stayed in a hotel in the centre of the old quarter, and it presented a feeling of nostalgia and antiquity, which is always my favorite.

M: Collecting antiques is my favorite hobby. Perhaps I'll go there next year. Where did you go next?

W: I traveled south along the coast. It was very hot. I hired a car and visited the seaside resorts and I even spent a whole day in one of them, bathing in the sun and getting really tanned. When I arrived in Valencia I left the coast and drove to Madrid. I visited the famous Prado museum there.

M: Did you see a bullfight in Spain?

W: Oh, no, not my cup of tea too much blood. Actually, despite the long tradition, many people are critical of bull fighting in Spain and the rest of the world. In 2010, the government of Barcelona issued a ban on bull fighting in Catalonia, although Madrid can still host it during the summer.

M: Yes, I can imagine. And from Madrid, where next?

W: Well, I only had three days left so I went on a bus trip to Salamanca. It's a very beautiful old city. After that I returned to Madrid and finally I flew home. I only got back yesterday.

M: Well, It certainly sounds as if you have a good time. Would you do it again?

W: Yes, in fact, I'm hoping to get a job in Barcelona so I can live there. I really like it.

1909 - News

Rome, Italy

A cruise ship crashed into a Venice dock on Sunday, hitting a moored tourist boat and sending onlookers running for safety in what one witness said resembled a “scene from a disaster movie.” The cruise ship, MSC Opera, rammed into the San Basilio terminal, and hit a smaller tourist boat--the River Countess -- that was docked there, the local port authority told CNN. Four people suffered “light injuries” in the accident, it said. The incident happened at around 8:30 a.m. local time on the Guidecca Canal, one of the busiest in the Italian city which is hugely popular with tourists. The cruise ship operator, MSC Cruises, said in a statement that the vessel “experienced a technical issue” while heading towards the terminal for mooring. The local port authority for Venice told CNN its priority on Sunday was managing the accident, but that from tomorrow it would be looking to “finally create a solution to the traffic of large ships in Venice.”

Fort Myers Beach, Florida

Another dead dolphin with plastic in its stomach has washed ashore in Florida. The 7-foot male dolphin was recovered from Fort Myers Beach in Big Carlos Pass, according to biologists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). They said the dolphin was found a few weeks ago, and a recent necropsy revealed a 24-inch hose found in the esophagus and fore-stomach of the animal. Samples are currently being tested to determine the exact cause of death.

Tokyo, Japan

A man carrying a knife in each hand and screaming “I will kill you” attacked a group of schoolchildren waiting at a bus stop just outside Tokyo on Tuesday, wounding at least 19 people, including 13 children, Japanese authorities and media said. The victims were lined up at a bus stop near Noborito Park in Kawasaki City when a man in his 40s or 50s attacked. NHK national television, quoting police, said that the suspect died after slashing himself in the neck. It wasn't immediately clear how many others had died.

Although Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, it has had a series of high-profile killings, including in 2016 when a former employee at a home for the disabled allegedly killed 19 and injured more than 20 others. In 2008, seven people were killed by a man who slammed a truck into a crowd of people in central Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district and then stabbed passers-by.

London, United Kingdom

A British woman is facing possible jail time in Dubai for calling her ex-husband's new wife a “horse” in a Facebook post almost three years ago, according to BBC News. Britain's Foreign Office confirmed to the BBC that it was “supporting a British woman and her family following her detention” in the United Arab Emirates.

Shahravesh, 55, was arrested at Dubai's airport after arriving to attend her ex-husband's funeral. Now she's apparently facing prosecution over comments she posted to Facebook in 2016, on photos of her ex with his new wife, at whom she directed an insult, calling her a “horse”.

Under cyber-crime laws in the UAE, a person can be sentenced to prison or fined for defamatory statements online.

The BBC said Shahravesh could face up to two years in jail or a a fine of about $65,000 -- even though she wasn't in the UAE when she posted the comments in question.

It is the new wife in Dubai, who is pursuing the legal case against Shahravesh.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Another American has died on Mount Everest, marking the ninth fatality on the Nepal side of the mountain, this climbing season. It's unclear what caused Chris Kulish's death at South Col Monday after he descended from the summit, an official with Nepal's tourism department told the Reuters news agency.

The American's death comes days after another climber died on the Nepal side. British mountaineer Robin Fisher, who'd previously warned of overcrowding on the world's highest peak, died during his descent Saturday.

Also last week, American Donald Cash, 55, died after reaching the summit. The government of Nepal issued a record number of climbing permits this season -- 381 people were given permission to ascend the world's highest peak, which can create a logjam to reach the summit.
