1909 - Professional Speaker

W: Peter Sampson is an internationally renowned sales and management speaker, trainer and author of the best-selling book: Business Communication Matters. Since 1983, he has given over 3,500 presentations in 26 countries on a variety of sales, management and relationship topics. Peter, welcome to our studio. First question on my list: How did you become an expert on management and sales?

M: Thanks,Ann. After graduating from Harvard with a business major, I spent years on the street selling advertising, and a variety of other products and services. I have read hundreds of books on these subjects and each year invest 10% of my income on personal and career development. As an executive, manager and business owner, I have managed employees in companies that range in sales from 10 million to over 1 billion dollars a year.

W: What can you do for a company that is considering a motivational speaker or trainer for their employees?

M: Empower their employees. Give them proven techniques and ideas that will help them achieve success for themselves as well as their employers. Effective motivation is inside-out not outside-in, therefore, it is important to look in the mirror for your success and not point your finger elsewhere.

W: What has been your most challenging moment in business, and how did you deal with it?

M: In my 35 years of career development as a professional speaker and trainer, I had witnessed 3 recessions when employee training is always the first thing cut out of most budgets. I drew a line in the sand and basically said to myself--either practice what you preach or you don't have the right to preach it anymore.

W: In your best-selling book, you offered quite a number of tips for dealing with employees. Can you recommend some of your best tips for our listeners?

M: Well, of course. Number one, drive decision making further down the ladder. Let people close to the issues and problems make the decisions. Give them the authority to use resources and make decisions. Number two，give authority with responsibility. Giving responsibility without authority is demotivating. Number three,communicate with integrity. Life is perceptual. All messages can be misinterpreted. Number four, lead by example. Learn to live by the rules you set for others. No exceptions. And number five, invest in training. The only way to improve skills and attitudes is with consistent and appropriate training. Invest in it regularly. Training is not a cost but a necessity for on-going improvement.

W: Yes, I believe there are more in the book. Let's turn to our next question: About your training program, what do participants of your sales and management boot camps gain from the experience?

M: Graduates from my Boot Camps understand the skills and attitudes required for success and how to apply them to have sustained continuous success. Most sales and management training today is only about techniques, strategies and tools. A person's self-image is the most important element in any successful career. 1909 - Linguistic

Welcome to this course of Language and Society, which is a sub-discipline of Linguistics known as Sociolinguistics. You may ask, why should we study language? How do the ways in which we communicate define our identities? And what is the relationship between our language and our society, between our language and our culture? These are some of the questions that we need to define and discuss in the course.

Well, some of you may have heard of this well-known linguistic stereotype: when two English men who have never met before come face to face in a railway compartment, they inevitably start talking about the weather. In some cases, this may simply be because they happen to find the subject interesting. The erratic and ever-changing nature of the weather here in Britain may well deserve and decimate our imagination, more often than not, to the same degree. Most people, though, are not particularly interested in analysis of climatic conditions, so there must be other reasons for conversations of this kind. One explanation is that it can often be quite embarrassing to be alone in the company of someone you are not acquainted with and not speak to him. If no conversation takes place the atmosphere can become rather strained. Therefore, by talking to the other person about some neutral topic like the weather, it is possible to strike up a relationship with him without actually having to say very much. Railway--compartment conversations of this kind--and they do happen, although not of course as often as the popular myth supposes--are a good example of the sort of important social function that is often fulfilled by language. Language is not simply a means of communicating information--about the weather or any other subject. It is also a very important means of establishing and maintaining relationships with other people. Probably the most important thing about the conversation between our two Englishmen is not the words they are using, but the fact that they are talking at all. The same is true with the conversations in the elevator, which is a modern invention for upgrading our urban life. When you meet an unexpected neighbor in the elevator, recent climatic conditions are an easy, smooth and ready topic for maintaining the friendly relationship that is intended by both parties.

There is also a second explanation. It is quite possible that the first Englishman, probably subconsciously, would like to get to know certain things about the second--for instance what sort of job he does and what social status he has. Without this kind of information he will not be sure exactly how he should behave towards him. He can, of course, make intelligent guesses about his companion from outer appearances, such as his settings, his belongings, the sort of clothes he is wearing, and other visual clues, but he can hardly ask him direct questions about his social background, at least not at this stage of the relationship. What he can do is to engage him in conversation--and any reasoning along these lines on his part is again usually subconscious. He is then likely to find out certain things about the other person quite easily. He will learn these things not so much from what the other man says as from how he says it, for whenever we speak, we cannot avoid giving our listeners clues about our origins and the sort of person we are. Our accent and our speech generally show what part of the country we come from, and what sort of background we have. We may even give some indication of certain of our ideas and attitudes, and all of this information can be used by the people we are speaking with to help them formulate an opinion about us.

These two aspects of language behavior are very important from a social point of view: first, the function of language in establishing social relationships; and, second, the role played by language in conveying information about the speaker. We shall concentrate for the moment on the second “clue-bearing” role, but it is clear that both these aspects of linguistic behavior are reflections of the fact that there is a close inter-relationship between language and society.
