1809 - Joint Legal Custody
Last week, we discussed the concept of joint legal custody. Today, let's turn to joint physical custody. In recent years, shared or joint physical custody has gained tremendous popularity as a means of caring for children after a divorce. While the court has the final word on custody decisions, the judge upholds most negotiated settlements.
Physical custody refers to the parent's right to have the children actually reside in that parent's home. Shared physical custody can take many forms, from summers at father's and the school year with mother, to switching homes every other day. Children have two primary residences, even if time spent in each residence is not equal. As we have learned last week, joint legal custody refers to the shared responsibility for making major decisions about a child's welfare including education, health care and religious upbringing, regardless of where the children are living. Frequently divorcing couples share legal custody without sharing physical custody.
We may ask: Why has joint physical custody gained in popularity? One positive reason is that women and men are realizing more the importance of fathers to children, and more men want to have a primary role in their lives. Many fathers are no longer content to be the biweekly visitor while Mom retains sole custody. As traditional marital roles change, so are our concepts of the best way to parent children after divorce.
Another reason for the increase in popularity relates to the increase in mothers who must work full-time. Solo parenting becomes quite difficult for a mother if she has a demanding full-time job, especially one with overtime or a commute. Many couples, whose pre-separation lives were already stretched thin, find they must cooperate and juggle time to manage the childcare needs.
W: Radisson Hotel. Joan Smith speaking. Can I help you?
M: Hello, it's Donald Roach here, from Fox Autodesign. I'm calling from the stand at the auto exhibition because I need to make some last-minute changes to the arrangements you're fixing for us at the hotel.
W: Right, let me just make a note of all the changes. Here we are. Starting with today, Tuesday, we've got 22 single rooms with shower or bath booked for Fox Autodesign staff for three nights, with 34 people booked in for dinner tonight at 8:00 in the Main Hall Restaurant. Is that right?
M: Yes, we still want the 22 rooms. I think people will start arriving about 6:30, probably. It's the numbers for the dinner tonight that have changed, and the number of rooms we need for the next two nights, as more people are arriving from the States tomorrow.
W: Well, I wonder if there will be a problem, but let's start with the dinner tonight. How many people will there be now?
M:
Can you fit in another nine, please? There will now be 43 for dinner.
W:
I'll let the restaurant know immediately. There's enough time to add the places, and I know there's space to get another table in the room. It would help to know if any of the extra people want a special diet. I've already got down that seven people are vegetarian.
M: Yes, three of the new people are vegetarian too. So that's 10 now, but there aren't any special diets needed apart from that.
W: That's no problem. It just helps if we can tell the kitchen in advance.
M: Sure. Now about the number of rooms we need for the next two nights.
W: Yes. you said you need more.
M: Yes, four more staff members are flying in tomorrow. Can you fit them in?
W: Let's see ... Do they want singles with shower or bath, like all the others?
M: Singles, ideally, but we may have to put them in doubles if that's all you've got.
W: I'm just checking ... I'm afraid can't put them in singles, but I've got two double rooms with twin beds that they could have both rooms have a bath and shower. How would that be?
M: That's fine, I'm sure. So we'll then have 22 single rooms and two doubles with twin beds for tomorrow
night -- right?
W: Yes, what about Thursday night then? Is that the same?
M: Yes, everyone will be staying then too, so well need the same rooms as Wednesday.
W: That's fine. I've got all that. Please call me as soon as possible if there are any more changes.
M: Sure. By the way, can you confirm that there is Wifi in the double room and in the single room as well? You know, we will hold conferences in the hotel rooms during our stay there.
W: Yes, we provide smart, fast and affordable Conference Wifi to our guests, single or double rooms alike. And the system has recently been upgraded for safety, speed and efficiency. Our staff will give you more instructions about it once you have checked in.
M: That's great. Thanks. Bye.

Swedish retail giant Ikea says it will stop selling single-use plastic products by 2020. It says the ban will apply across all its global stores. Ikea says in future, it will design products to be able to be repaired, resold or recycled.
Its move follows hard on the heels of an announcement by the European Union that it plans to ban plastic items including straws, cotton buds, cutlery, balloon sticks and drink stirrers, Single-use plastics can be very damaging to marine life. The move is part of its plan to design all Ikea products with the aim of using only renewable and recycled materials and to achieve zero emissions by 2025.
It will also increase the number of non-meat meals and snacks in its restaurants. Torbjorn Loof, chief executive at Inter Ikea Group, said: “Through our size and reach we have the opportunity to inspire and enable more than one billion people to live better lives, within the limits of the planet.

On Tuesday, the billionaire Microsoft cofounder and philanthropist said he'll pick up the tab for all US college graduates to download a copy of Hans Rosling's book, Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World -- and Why Things Are Better Than You Think. The book, released in April and currently listed at e-download on various sites, offers advice on how to think about the world and how personal $14.99 as an e-download on various sites, offers advice on how to think about the world and how personal instincts can impact our interpretation of information.
Rosling, who died at age 68 last year, wrote Faclfulness alongside his son Ola and daughter-in-law Anna. The Swedish statistician and academic was well-known for his Ted talks. “When we have a fact-based worldview, we can see that the world is not as bad as it seems -- and we can see what we have to do to keep making it better”, Rosling writes in the book. Gates said he agreed with this advice and encouraged graduates “to learn, to think, andact, factfully.”

There's something decidedly conservative about a turtle's plodding, carefully considered ways. Even the fact that he carries his home on his back -- and retreats inside of it at the first sign of trouble -- suggests this reptile plays things safer than most. But recently, in Ontario, Canada, thousands of turtles are injured or crushed this year trying to cross the highways to look for a soft, warm place to raise the hatchlings. The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, the biggest trauma and rehabilitation hub for turtles in the province, has declared a state of emergency for the animal. So far this year, the organization has taken in nearly 600 injured turtles, stretching its resources to the breaking point. “We are beyond maximum caring capacity. We've never seen it this busy,” said Sue Carstairs, executive director of the center. Record rainfall, however, may be a factor. The province has seen so much precipitation, even Toronto's iconic islands were temporarily closed due to extreme flooding.

Argentina's central bank has raised interest rates for the third time in eight days as the country's currency, the peso, continues to fall sharply. On Friday, the bank hiked rates to 40% from 33.25%, a day after they were raised from 30.25%. A week ago, they were raised from 27.25%. The rises are aimed at supporting the peso, which has lost a quarter of its value over the past year.
Inflation, a perennial problem in Argentina, was at 25% in 2017, the highest rate in Latin America except for Venezuela. This year, the central bank has set an inflation target of 15% and has said it will continue to act to enforce it.
The opposition wants to stop the government from removing subsidies in controlled prices, such as energy and utility tariffs, which may bring more inflation in the short term but could help bring it down from above 20% now to about 5% by 2020.

Here's yet another impact of the rash of school shootings that has plagued America in recent years: Interest in insurance coverage against such incidents is on the rise from both public and private schools. That's especially so in the wake of the latest high-profile mass shootings that left more than two dozen dead at high schools in Florida and Texas, according to companies that sell this type of insurance.
Officials at McGowan Cos., which says it's the largest underwriter of “active shooter” coverage, said they're having a tough time keeping up with hundreds of inquiries from schools and other customers such as local
governments, shopping mall operators, senior care facilities and hotels.
Premiums can vary from $1,400 for $1 million of insurance for a small private school to $50,000 for $5 million and as high as $100,000 for $10 million of insurance in coverage for large public school districts. McGowan's firm covers $250,000 per shooting victims who are either killed or disabled. That doesn't include medical expenses, which can be substantial.
